Cucumbers are crisp, refreshing, and perfect for salads ā but they can lose their crunch quickly if not stored correctly. Hereās how to extend their shelf lifeĀ and keep them fresh for days (or even weeks):
1ļøā£ Keep Them Dry
Never wash cucumbers before storing them. Excess moistureĀ speeds up decay. Only wash them right before eating.
2ļøā£ Wrap Each Cucumber Tightly in Plastic Wrap
Individually wrap each cucumber in plastic wrap (cling film)Ā to lock in natural moisture and prevent air exposure. This slows down water loss and keeps the skin firm and crisp.
3ļøā£ Store in the Right Spot
Place cucumbers in the crisper drawerĀ of your fridge where humidityĀ is moderate. Avoid storing them in the coldest part near the freezer, as too much coldĀ can cause soft spots.
4ļøā£ Keep Away from Ethylene-Producing Fruits
Never store cucumbers near apples, tomatoes, or bananas. These release ethylene gas, which speeds up ripening and spoilage.
5ļøā£ Refresh or Repurpose
If cucumbers start to soften, slice them and soak in ice-cold waterĀ for a few hours to bring back some crunch ā or turn them into picklesĀ instead of throwing them away.
