🚫 What NOT to Put in the Dishwasher (Even If You're Tempted!)

The dishwasher is a modern miracle—time-saving, eco-friendly, and convenient. But not everything belongs in it. Some items can get damaged, or worse, damage your dishwasher.
Here’s a must-read list of things you should always hand-wash instead:

1. Wooden Items
Whether it’s a cutting board, wooden spoons, or fancy wood-handled knives, they don’t belong in the dishwasher. The heat and moisture can crack, warp, or dry out the wood.
2. Cast Iron Cookware
Your cast iron skillet needs love—not soap and jets. Dishwashers will strip away its seasoning and cause rust. Stick to warm water and a brush.
3. Sharp Knives
High-quality knives will dull faster in the dishwasher due to friction and banging around. Plus, the detergent can damage the blades. Always hand-wash and dry immediately.
4. Nonstick Pans
Even if it says "dishwasher safe," it’s safer to wash your nonstick cookware by hand. Harsh detergents can wear down the nonstick coating, shortening its life.
5. Crystal and Fine China
These delicate items can chip, crack, or lose their decorative finish in the dishwasher. If it’s sentimental or expensive—hand-wash it gently.
6. Insulated Travel Mugs and Bottles
Unless labeled “dishwasher safe,” the heat can ruin the vacuum seal, making them useless. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions.
7. Aluminum Cookware
Bare or untreated aluminum can oxidize or discolor in the dishwasher, turning your pans dull gray. It may also leave marks on other dishes.
8. Plastic That’s Not Dishwasher-Safe
Thin or low-quality plastic can melt, warp, or release chemicals when exposed to dishwasher heat. Look for the "top rack only" symbol if you’re unsure.
9. Anything with Adhesive Labels
If your containers still have price tags or sticky labels, remove them first. Otherwise, the labels might clog your filter or leave residue everywhere.
🧼 Pro Tip:
When in doubt, check the bottom of the item or the manufacturer’s label. If it doesn’t clearly say “dishwasher safe,” play it safe and hand-wash.
👍 Final Thoughts:
Taking care of your kitchen tools extends their life and keeps your dishwasher running smoothly. And remember: at Five Brothers Appliance, we make sure every dishwasher we sell or refurbish is tested for top performance—but what you put inside it matters too!
